In 2019, Normanton Town Council secured a long term lease for Normanton Town Hall.
This includes the original Town Hall building only and not the more modern annexe or additional buildings to the rear.
The original Town Hall building comprises a basement for storage, offices on the ground floor and offices on the first floor.
The Town Council intends to refurbish the building and make it accessible with a ramp to the front, automatic doors and a lift to enable the public to access the first floor.
We intend to create additional meeting and event spaces on the ground and first floors and refurbish the office accommodation on the first floor.
We will be installing accessible toilet facilities on the ground and first floors to ensure that the building is complaint with the Equality Act.
We have consulted with local community groups and established that there is an interest in using meeting rooms at the Town Hall, and since the closure of the Alice Bacon Community Centre, event spaces in the town are limited.
Once the works are completed, the Town Council intends to make the meeting and events spaces available to the community for ad-hoc meetings and events and this will be free of charge, although donations will be accepted.
The funding for this project has been carefully planned over the last five years and we are confident that the project is affordable without any significant increase to the precept.
The Town Council is very much looking forward to the completion of this project and creating what we hope can be a hub for the community.
The current position is that we have written to Wakefield MDC, the landlord, for permission to carry out the works.
Once permission is granted, we will formally appoint the architect to begin work on the planning and tendering process.
We will continue to provide updates on the project via our website and Facebook page.
